How to Find a Black Woman Therapist in South Carolina (or Anywhere!)
Finding a Black woman therapist shouldn’t be exhausting or overwhelming. If you’re looking for a Black Woman therapist, the best place to start is a therapist directory like Therapy for Black Girls, Psychology Today, TherapyDen, etc. then narrow down your pick through a free consultation.
Quick answer:
Find a therapist directory (Therapy for Black Girls, Psychology Today, TherapyDen, etc.)
Schedule a 15 minute consultation
Ensure your budget/insurance aligns with your therapist pick
Figure out your therapy method (virtual or in person)
Where do I look?
The easiest way to find a therapist is to look at different therapist directories, whether it is Therapy for Black Girls, PsychologyToday, TherapyDen, etc. These websites are hubs for therapists of all backgrounds with their credentials and expertise listed plainly. I’ve found all of my therapists using directories (outside of my college therapist!)
How do I determine if we’re a good match?
Finding the therapist who fits you best is the second part. Be intentional about reading their bio. How does their expertise align with your needs? If you see someone who looks nice, but doesn’t explicitly say they work with “anxiety”, you may meet with them and feel like you two don’t align, which may discourage you from trying again. To ensure you and your potential therapist align, schedule a 15 minute consultation! All therapists don’t offer one, but it’s definitely something I would suggest you ask about if you’re looking at one who doesn’t. I offer a 15 minute consultation and have found that clients really appreciate getting to know me as do I them.
What should I expect from a 15 minute consultation?
Expect to provide the therapist with some background about your concerns, symptoms and goals for therapy. In my 15 minute consultation, I also provide potential clients with some background information about who I am, who I see, credentials, how the first session typically goes and provide answers to any questions they’ve got for me.
How much will it cost me?
Figure out your budget. If you’re paying out of pocket, make sure that you’re looking for therapists within a manageable budget. If you’re utilizing insurance, ensure that the potential therapist accepts your insurance (verify this before scheduling your initial intake!) Don’t just rely on seeing the insurance panel listed in their “about me” section.
How do I want to “do” therapy?
Figure out your “method.” Do you want to be in person? Do you want to be virtual? If you want to be seen virtually then you need to ensure that the therapist you want to see practices in the state that you reside in. You cannot see a therapist who practices in North Carolina if you live in South Carolina (UNLESS they are also licensed in South Carolina). That’s why it’s worth deciding your therapy format ahead of time.
